Time to Spring Cleanse!

The days are getting longer, the temperatures are getting warmer, and the trees are starting to bloom. Nature is rejuvenating, marking the onset of spring. I’m sure most of you have heard of spring cleaning. Well, get ready because today we are doing spring cleansing.

It’s Kapha Season: The second half of winter into early spring when the environment mirrors the heavy, wet, and cold qualities of the Kapha dosha.

Ayurveda divides the year into six seasons, consisting of early winter, late winter, spring, summer, monsoon, and autumn. Although these seasonal changes are primarily observed in the Indian subcontinent, winter, spring, and summer can be likened to the period between mid-January to mid-July while monsoon, autumn, and early winter can be likened to the period between mid-July to mid-January. These six seasons are then associated with the aggravation, accumulation, and pacification of one of the three doshas.

What does this mean for you? It means that your body is ready for a spring cleanse to rid itself of dense toxins associated with these cold, wet months known as Kapha season.

Because of the accumulation of the dense, heavy, and wet qualities of Kapha (seen as mucus, phlegm, and colds during this period) the seasonal regimen during late winter primarily focuses on refreshing and removing. To maintain balance during the Kapha season, it’s important to focus on eating lighter, easily digestible foods to support the body's natural detoxification process. Here are some Ayurvedic recommendations for a spring cleanse diet:

  • Favor Warm, Spicy Foods: Eating warm, spicy foods can help stimulate the digestive fire and support the body's natural detoxification process. Some good options include ginger, black pepper, chili peppers, and mustard seeds.
  • Eat Lighter, Drier Foods: Eating lighter, drier foods can help balance the heavy, damp qualities of Kapha. Some good options include legumes, barley, quinoa, and leafy greens.
  • Avoid Heavy, Saturated Fats: Heavy, saturated fats can be difficult to digest and can contribute to Kapha imbalances. It is best to avoid foods like fried foods, cheese, and fatty meats.
  • Drink Warm, Stimulating Beverages: Drinking warm, stimulating beverages like ginger tea or chai tea can help support the digestive fire and promote detoxification.
