Ayurveda classified plants by color long before anyone could name a phytochemical. That system held up because color and chemistry come out of the same processes. Every pigment a plant produces is also a working molecule with a job inside the plant.

Amla: Antioxidants That Protect Their Own Antioxidants

Amla is a small, sour, translucent green fruit and one of the most studied plants in Ayurvedic medicine. It is best known for vitamin C, but the vitamin C is not the whole story, and it may not even be the main one.

Amla carries a dense group of hydrolyzable tannins, including emblicanin A and B, pedunculagin, and punigluconin, alongside gallic acid, ellagic acid, corilagin, and quercetin. Reported vitamin C content varies widely by cultivar, ripeness, and testing method, which is part of what drew researchers to the fruit in the first place: its measured antioxidant capacity consistently exceeds what its ascorbic acid content alone would predict. The tannins appear to contribute antioxidant activity of their own, and to help protect the fruit's vitamin C from heat and oxidation.
